MusicXML files let you share your sheet music between different notation software. Here’s how to export them in Sibelius, Dorico, and Finale—step by step!
Sibelius
Export a Single File
- Click File > Export > MusicXML.
- Choose Uncompressed (larger file) or Compressed (smaller file).
- Press Export.
- Select where to save the file and click Save.
Batch Export (Multiple Files at Once)
- Open any Sibelius file (or start a new project).
- Go to the Home menu and click Plugins (on the right side of the ribbon).
- Under Batch Processing, choose Convert Folder of Scores to MusicXML.
- Choose Uncompressed or Compressed, then click Process Folder.
- Select the folder containing the Sibelius files and click Open.
- Pick a destination folder for the exported files and click OK.
Dorico
Export a Single File
- Click File > Export > MusicXML.
- In the Export MusicXML window, pick a file format:
- Compressed (.mxl)
- Uncompressed (.xml)
- Choose which flows (sections of your project) to export by checking the boxes. You can also click Select All.
- (Optional) Check Export layouts as separate files if needed.
- Click Choose Folder and select where to save the file.
- Click OK to finish exporting.
Finale
Export a Single File
1. Click File > Export > MusicXML.
2. Choose MusicXML from the dropdown.
3. Click Save.
Batch Export (Multiple Files at Once)
1. Click File > Export > Translate Folder to MusicXML.
2. Select the folder containing your Finale files and click Open.
3. If you see a warning about overwriting existing MusicXML files, click Yes (if that’s okay).
4. Finale will now export all files in the folder automatically.
